Controlling the number of children

Some governments say how many children a family can have in their country. They may control the number of children someone has through taxes.

It is sometimes necessary and right for a government to control the population in this way.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer.

Nowadays a bad demographic situation arises in many countries. Some countries suffer from overpopulation and others vice versa need more people. This explains why some governments introduce specific demographic policies. I partially support controlling the number of children trough taxes and let me explain my opinion below.

Obviously, some benefits and tax reductions are very important and welcomed for people. For example, many European countries have special benefits for mothers who give birth to a child and governments increase these benefits for the second, the third and following children. Also some tax reduction exist for families that have many children. Old Europe needs more people, so EU policies are aimed at solving the problem of under-population throw tax regulations. So, I think that some extra money for people who comply with the policy is not superfluous. Everybody likes to get some support from their government.

On the other hand, a lot of fines and tax increase exist for citizens who break official recommendations about the quantity of children in a family. In some parts of the world, like in China, we can see the overpopulation. They have strict laws to reduce the birth rate. Chinese government impose some fines to people who decide to have more than one or two children. I find it unfair. There are so many reasons for having or not having children. Only mother and father can decide how many children they want. So, I strongly disagree with any punishments in this field. Government should not solve demographic problems in such a way.

To conclude, I’d like to say that population regulations measures such as controlling the number of children someone can have through taxes are acceptable and reasonable for modern societies. However, governments should only support and encourage families, but not to punish and overtax people who have more or fewer children than a regime urges.
